How to separate
Find out how to separate coffee pods, capsules and cartons.Small gestures of appreciation of the environment
Recycling and disposing of waste correctly is a good practice that everyone should adopt, in order to respect the environment that surrounds us. It takes very little to correctly dispose of and sort rubbish correctly. All pod and capsule materials can be recycled, provided they are disposed of correctly, or used for other purposes.
When you choose to have a delicious coffee, you are also doing something good for the environment by correctly separating pods, capsules and packaging. Below you will find all the instructions on how to give new life to materials through recycling or recovery, for a more sustainable and mindful consumption. Remember that for a correct sorting of the different materials it is necessary to always check the disposal regulations of the municipality where you live.
Pods
Caffè Borbone coffee pods are perfectly disposable in the organic waste, from the filter paper, the paper sachet that contains the coffee, which is made entirely of cellulose.
The Caffè Borbone coffee pod was the first compostable pod to be placed on the Italian market, a worthy way to preserve the planet because it is made of materials that can be completely disposed of in organic waste and ideal for being turned into compost.
The pod has CIC (Consorzio Italiano Compostatori – Italian Composting and Biogas Association) certification, a guarantee of quality based on the principle of suitability for composting.
Compatible capsules
The coffee is contained in a small cylindrical plastic container. Once the capsule has been used, it is necessary to separate the components in order to be able to sort them correctly. The first thing to do is to remove the aluminium tab and dispose of it in the metal/aluminium collection. Continue by cleaning the capsule of coffee residues, and once clean, dispose of the wrapper in the plastic recycling bin.
This procedure is valid for all capsules with the exception of capsules compatible with Nescafé® Dolce Gusto®* machines, which must be disposed of in the household waste bin due to their composition, and new aluminium capsules compatible with Nespresso®* domestic machines, which must be disposed of in the aluminium recycling bin, after having been cleaned of coffee remains.
Packaging
The single-use sachet containing the capsules, which sanitises the coffee portion and allows it to retain its fragrance and aroma for longer, is made of a plastic/aluminium coating and is therefore disposable in the plastic recycling.
The same applies to the ground coffee bag. The single-use sachet for the compostable pod, on the other hand, can be disposed of in the paper recycling bin.
Box
The plastic box in which the pods and capsules are stored has countless advantages, such as ensuring chemical inertness, being impervious to liquids and gases, and providing protection from light and air. Once the capsules or pods have been used up, it is important that the box is disposed of properly in the plastic collection. The compostable pod cardboard box, on the other hand, can be disposed of in the paper recycling bin.
Don Carlo capsules
Don Carlo plastic capsules follow the same packaging criteria as the other capsules and therefore have the same disposal methods as the other plastic capsules.
The new Don Carlo compostable capsules, on the other hand, are made of a special biopolymer with a high biodegradability and a filter paper top and can therefore be disposed of in the organic waste container.
Eco accessories Kit
The set consists of paper cups, which can be placed in the paper collection, and birch wood stirrers, which are biodegradable and compostable and can be thrown away in the organic waste.
External carton
The external carton of Caffè Borbone packaging (capsules and pods) is certified by the international NGO Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The certification serves to ensure the sustainable management of forests and the traceability of products derived from them.
The external packaging is totally disposable in the dedicated paper and cardboard recycling container.
Coffee grounds
Coffee grounds go in the organic bin or can be used as a natural fertiliser. They also lend themselves to many uses, such as in cosmetics.
